Solar Energy: The Pros and the Cons

We’re all aware of the serious issues we are encountering due to carbon emissions and greenhouse gases. Solar power is a top contender in the movement to increase our usage of alternative energy and decrease our fossil fuel consumption. Even if you’re not personally interested in this technology, gaining an understanding of the pros of solar energy in addition to its potential drawbacks is a good idea. After all, many believe solar energy will someday have a main impact on how we conduct our everyday lives.

So, let us examine the pros and cons of solar energy, as well as what makes them advantages and disadvantages.

The Pros associated with Solar Energy

  • Lower energy bills
This is the main reason most people decide to install a photovoltaic system. Lower energy bills represent the most important pros associated with solar power simply because utility companies keep raising their own rates. That trend is nearly certain to continue as non-renewable fuels become scarcer.
  • Lower air pollution
Although probably the next most significant reason individuals are opting for Photo voltaic systems, over time it may actually be the most important. Like a society we’re addicted to fossil fuels, and the air pollution caused by the heavy fossil fuel consumption is not showing any signs of disappearing. We need to move to another energy source to guarantee that generations to come can enjoy our planet. Solar energy produces far less air pollution than burning fossil fuels.
  • Highly reliable and suitable in most environments
Photovoltaic systems perform reliably in most weather conditions and climates.
  • Low maintenance
Solar systems have no moving components or fuel. Occasional cleaning and inspections are the only maintenance required.
  • Energy independence
For many individuals, the ability to attain energy independence is another of the essential pros associated with solar energy. As utility company energy costs continue to increase, this benefit will become much more important.

The Cons associated with Solar Energy

  • High initial cost
Solar systems can be expensive to acquire and install. This is one of the disadvantages of solar energy that deters lots of people.
  • Sunshine is limited
A PV system will only generate solar energy when the sun is shining. In addition to not producing any solar power at night, solar panels tend to be less productive during cloudy days. This, too, is among the big disadvantages of solar power.
  • Houses must be energy-efficient
Energy usage in the house must be reduced as much as possible in order to offset part of the high initial price of a photovoltaic system. Energy must be used a lot more conservatively. It may be very expensive to increase the energy efficiency of a home, but as soon as it is accomplished the cost savings can add up.

As you have seen, there are lots of pros associated with solar power, however the disadvantages must also be considered. One hopes that generally the pros associated with solar power will outweigh the cons, resulting in the wider adoption of solar energy as a power source.
